Английское название Italic указывает на то, что впервые подобный шрифт появился в 1501 г. в Италии, в типографии Альда Мануция (Aldus Manutius, 1447–1515) в Венеции. Он был нарезан болонским гравером Франческо Гриффо (Francesco Griffo, ок. 1450–1518) на основе рукописных курсивов папской канцелярии и не имел прописных. Как правило, сейчас применяется вместе с прямым начертанием как выделительное, хотя Альд Мануций заказывал курсив как самостоятельный шрифт с большей ёмкостью, чем прямая антиква [шрифты с засечками]. Стал рассматриваться как выделительное начертание (с применением наклонных прописных) уже в середине XVI в.Курсив - от лат. cursivus – бегущий.
